Maharaj Trio

Bio

The Maharaj Project: 001 is a unique collaboration between Nickodemus (NYC) & The Maharaj Trio (India).

A North Indian musical family from Varanasi, whose musical tradition stretches back 500 years. The trio plays Jugalbandi (translated: intertwined twins), in which the melodic improvisation of two successive responsive, equitable soloists is designed. Vikash plays sarod, Prabhash tablas and Abhishek sitar.

With exquisite skill and artistry, this charismatic father-and-sons trio comes from a long line (15 generations) of dedicated musicians. From Varanasi (India), they travel the world delighting international audiences with their heart-full, intricate ragas - breathing great joy and vitality into music that dates back thousands of years.

Vikash Maharaj plays Sarod, Abhishek Maharaj plays Sitar and Prabhash Maharaj plays Tabla. The Sarod is a fretless stringed musical instrument, known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality. The Sitar is a plucked stringed instrument descended from long-‐necked lutes with a sweet, overtone‐rich texture. The Tabla consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres.
