Anna Coddington has won the coveted APRA Silver Scroll with her bilingual waiata ‘Kātuarehe'!

Check out the video here for the now award-winning track.

The Tāmaki Makaurau-based singer and songwriter (Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Te Arawa) was awarded the Silver Scroll, recognising excellence in songwriting, at a ceremony in Wellington at the St James Theatre. It is the first time Anna has won the Silver Scroll, after previously reaching the Top Five for 'Bird In Hand'.

A much-deserved Silver Scroll Award win for Anna and her co-writers, the funk-filled ‘Kātuarehe' - co-written by Anna, Noema Te Hau III, Ruth Smith and Kawiti Waetford - means “to be outstanding, marvellous” in English. The waiata features on Anna’s new album Te Whakamiha.

A huuuuuuge congrats to Anna for this much-deserved award!

The album has also seen Anna nominated for four awards at the upcoming Waiata Māori Music Awards.

Speaking about winning the award, Coddington said -

I remember when I was very young, when I first started writing songs, I saw an ad about the Silver Scroll Awards in a magazine somewhere and I thought oh that sounds like the mana award. And then just put that thought aside because I thought oh I'm never going to do that.

But I gave up a long time ago on the idea of good music and bad music, I think there's just music and you either get it or you don't, so thank you for getting it, thank you for getting the song we wrote."

The award was voted on by local APRA members, with Coddington coming out on top after reaching the top 20 shortlist four times previously. It features on her new album, which has been similarly met with acclaim.

“It’s a departure from her previous albums; a bilingual body of work in te reo Māori and English, it’s the most collaborative album she’s ever made and it heralds a brand new sound, one which she loosely describes as “Māori funk". Think R&B, rock, soul, pop and lashings of Prince-inspired funk” - Dominion Post

Ka rawe Anna!
