Debut

by Mon Ami / 2005

Release Notes

With qualities likened to Crowded House and Simon & Garfunkel, Mon Ami is a fusion of folk and rock, intertwined around drifting vocal melodies, harmonicas and quirky guitar rhythms, softened by warm piano, vocal harmonies and searing fiddle lines.

Mon Ami started in 2004 as Henry Marks and Simon Park - two individuals from Wellington who combined to further a unique sound nurtured over the past 10 years. 2005 saw the addition of Rupert Mackintosh to the band, bringing additional guitar, vocal harmonies and searing fiddle lines to the Mon Ami sound.

During 2004, Henry and Si recorded the Mon Ami demo with a single microphone in a modest seaside studio in Lyall Bay, Wellington. From that demo, their first single for b-Net radio, 'About These Things', spent seven weeks in Radio Active's Top 11, peaking at number one and continued its popularity by becoming the station's most played New Zealand track for all of 2004 – a significant achievement given its release late in the year.

In May 2006, the band released their EP Extended Play. Excellent sales of this and a highly successful nationwide tour spring boarded Mon Ami and placed them in the right space to independently release their first studio album – Debut.
